Reawakening
A reawakening is often caused by an external event that shakes things up so significantly that what’s most important immediately comes into focus. Once we see what’s beneath the surface, everything changes. We can’t unsee what we’ve seen and feel compelled to take action. This action is often driven by the intrinsic motivation of feeling connected to a greater purpose, and eventually fulfilling this purpose becomes our life’s mission. The reawakening is the spark that reignites the smoldering fire lying dormant in our soul, ready to be seen and set free.
Early days of Spring are reawakening the plant life around us. After a long winter and more than a year in a global pandemic, humans are in need of a similar reawakening. It first seemed as if the pandemic might have brought a new way of living with it, yet now it appears that many people are eagerly rushing back to their pre-pandemic lives, whether those lives served them or not.
Our modern culture makes a return to “the way things were” far too easy. While we may find comfort in such a return to pre-pandemic living, we might benefit from recalling the challenges that accompany such a way of life: stress, indulgence, and escape - all things that focus our attention outside of ourselves. To reawaken, we must shift out of our default way of being; we must see past our influences, beliefs, and patterns to reveal what has been hidden under decades of conditioning. A true reawakening is one where we shift our focus inward on ourselves to rediscover what we really want out of life.
